More Honor Code
Veronica is retyping a sample honor code from Lawrence Middle School and putting it on the wiki. See what you think about it. What should we change? You can edit the page in the wiki; please do it in such a way that we can tell what you’ve changed. Maybe say why you changed it. If no changes are made, that will be the honor code. Let your parents see it as well; translate it if you need to. Everyone should agree that this is the code we are adopting.

wow.all the things u would expect on the honor code is right there!
but what if something like this happens?
#1
two ppl, working in the same classroom.(individually)they haven’t done anything wrong, but, suppose they happen to be researching the same thing.etc etc.they sit kinda close, enough to pass notes, but just a little further to have to throw paper to one another. when they present it, some of the stuff they wrote was the same, bc they dont know how to say it in different words.
does that count?will it be investigated further?will u take a student’s word for it?
#2
what about ppl who seem to have the tendancy to break the rules just to wear earings?if something is confiscated, but a person gets the item back, and they happen to make the same mistake again, is there a punnishment?
i think the rules are expected to be followed by just about any good citizen.it builds character and integrity…if this is a success for us, is there the possiblity that the whole school will follow this honor code?

Ashley: Thanks for responding and really thinking about the code. You’re right, it’s very complete; that’s why I decided it would be a good starting off place for us. Now, on to your questions.
#1 I’m not sure what difference it makes in the scenario you’ve described if the 2 people are throwing notes or sharing info. I think the issue is: if this is a project where the teacher allows collaboration, then there’s no problem with sharing info at all, only throwing paper in class. Throwing paper is not an honor code violation, it’s a discipline issue. It’s not unethical; it’s disruptive to others. If the teacher says that everyone should complete the assignment independently, then it’s cheating.
#2 Let’s leave names out of it, but when a student is clearly disobeying the rules and has been warned repeatedly, so it’s not like they just forgot, then I do think there should be consequences. In the example you gave, the correct way to handle it probably should have been: 1st time warning and the student removes the earrings. 2nd time the teacher confiscates the earrings and returns them after school 3rd time, parent must come to pick up earrings or they are returned at end of the school year. I don’t like to use punishments; logical consequences seem to work better at teaching kids to do the right thing. A logical consequence means as a result of your action, something happens to you that makes sense. Scraping gum off of tables is a logical consequence of gum chewing. Staying in during nutrition is a logical consequence of arriving tardy. But, none of this is really honor code stuff. If your question is: what do we do for people who break the honor code, well that’s another question, and a good one.

oh.sorry about the name thing.yah i guess it isnt really about the honor code, but i guess i was thinking about the consequences, like you pointed out.
thanks for the answers…
one more thing,Ms.Zana…
will the whole school follow the honor code
like us if it is a success?or will the whole school
be following it once we are satisfied with this honor code?

We will need to try out the code before asking the whole school to do so. If we see there are things that need changing, we should do so before 1800 kids are involved.

it’s a good idea though…let’s take over all the schools in the world!!!just kidding.
well,I hope it’s a success and that it works out.
even though I was one of the people who didn’t want it, you can’t win against the opposing team of pros, can you???T_T
i wish the con side did win…..
